Morristown NJ has a bit of something for buffs of every variety: American history, architectural treasures, eclectic shopping, lots of dining choices, live entertainment, quiet residential areas and a bustling downtown. What Morristown also has are lots of beautiful older homes and buildings with plumbing infrastructures that can go back generations—which can pose big problems for homeowners.
When General George Washington and the Continental Army encamped here twice during the Revolutionary War, plumbing was the least of their problems. (Easy for us to say.) Nowadays, that’s not the case. Over time, wear and corrosion to plumbing fixtures, leaky faucets and slow drains in older homes means they are more susceptible to plumbing problems than the average post-WWII structure.

Corroding pipes and lead-based solders.
Over the years metal piping can begin to corrode and become susceptible to rust, which can make the water unsafe to use. Furthermore, older copper pipes were typically joined with lead-based solder which can corrode as well, raising the lead levels of the water.
If you live in a home with its original pipes joined by lead solder, the New Jersey Department of Health recommends the following:
- Never cook, drink or prepare with water from your hot water faucet.
- Let your cold water faucet run for 15 to 30 seconds if it has been sitting for several hours.
- Boiling does not remove lead from the water. In fact, excessive boiling only raises the concentration of lead through evaporation.
Are drains still running slow? Damaged sewer pipes could be the problem.
Older homes settle over time. This can put a strain on underground pipes which can become buckled or bowed thus affecting the efficiency of the water flow to the sewer line. If you’ve tried clearing slow drains and the water still doesn’t go down as fast as it should, you may have a sewer pipe problem. This is definitely not a do-it-yourself project. First of all, you can’t see into the interior of the pipe to locate the source of the problem. (But Stashluk can!) To fix a damaged pipe we’ll first clear the pipe before inspecting it with a sewer camera for an accurate diagnosis. In the event the pipe requires replacement, Stashluk has the expertise to swap it out and replace it with a new pipe that will work absolute wonders.
Tree roots are also a common problem with older sewer pipes. Like above, as pipes age and the ground shifts small cracks can occur allowing tree roots to sneak into the interior of the pipe. Once tree roots invade the pipe, sewer drain clogs are inevitable.
Frequent clogging
Routine maintenance of drain pipes is a big help but older pipes can still pose problems due to years of soap scum and gunk that line the walls of the pipe and restrict water flow. Stashluk can clean these drains more effectively than any home remedies or store-bought drain cleaners.
