When summer heats up in the Summit, NJ area it’s good to know how to get the most out of your air conditioners or central air conditioning system. That means taking steps to ensure your home’s air conditioning is operating efficiently and saving you money on your energy bills.
Here are a few things you can do to keep your home air conditioned, comfortable and cool during the summer months.
Modernize and install a programmable thermostat
You don’t need to run the central air conditioning at full tilt when no one is home. Stashluk can install a programmable thermostat and help you set it so that you are saving energy when you’re away from your home.
Use fans where possible
Fans can help you get the most out of the cooled air in your home, and they use less electricity than air conditioners. A ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting by about 4° F with no reduction in comfort!
Change air conditioner filters
A dirty filter will make it harder for your air conditioning unit to cool your home. Make sure you replace or clean your air conditioning filters regularly. If you don’t know where your filters are, Stashluk can help.
Guard the sunny side of your home
Close the shades, curtains and blinds on the sunny side of your house during the day to block out sunlight and reduce heat.
Keep cool, keep it closed
Make sure your windows and doors are closed tightly while your air conditioner is running to keep in the cool air. Adding or replacing worn weather stripping around doors and windows can help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
Landscape for energy efficiency
Properly placed trees can reduce surrounding air temperatures by as much as 9°F. Plant deciduous (leaf-shedding) trees to the south and west of your home for shade, and use evergreens to create winter windbreaks on the north and northwest sides of your home.
Get an annual tune up
It’s a good idea to get your central A/C system or window and wall units inspected annually. An annual inspection can find small problems and head them off before they become bigger deals that waste energy and lead to major repairs or replacement.
Find the right air conditioner
If you are shopping for a new air conditioner, look for energy efficient models that have earned the ENERGY STAR® label, and make sure you buy the proper size. An air conditioner that is too large will start up and turn off more frequently, and won’t be as effective dehumidifying the air. Rebates are also available for high efficiency units.
